What is HIPEC?
HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) is an advanced treatment performed after cytoreductive surgery to destroy microscopic cancer cells remaining in the abdomen.
A heated chemotherapy solution (41–43°C) is circulated directly into the abdominal cavity, allowing higher local drug concentration and fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy.
HIPEC helps extend survival and improve the quality of life for patients with certain abdominal cancers.

Which Cancers Can Be Treated with HIPEC?
HIPEC is primarily used for cancers that spread to the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), including:
-
Ovarian cancer (advanced or recurrent)
-
Colorectal cancer with peritoneal metastases
-
Appendiceal cancer (Pseudomyxoma Peritonei)
-
Gastric cancer with peritoneal spread
-
Primary peritoneal carcinoma
-
Peritoneal mesothelioma
How the HIPEC Procedure is Performed
Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS): Visible tumor nodules inside the abdomen are surgically removed.
HIPEC Treatment Phase: Heated chemotherapy solution is circulated for 60–90 minutes, killing any remaining cancer cells.
Drain & Closure: The fluid is drained, and the abdomen is closed.
Recovery: The patient is monitored in the ICU or surgical ward for stabilization.

Benefits of HIPEC
-
Targets cancer directly within the abdomen
-
Higher efficacy with reduced systemic side effects
-
Lower recurrence rates in selected cases
-
Improved long-term survival when combined with optimal surgery
-
May reduce the need for systemic chemotherapy
Recovery and Hospital Stay
-
Hospital stay: Approximately 10–14 days
-
Recovery period: 4–6 weeks before resuming normal activities
-
Follow-up: Regular oncology and imaging check-ups are required
Cost of HIPEC in Turkey (Compared to Other Countries)

Possible Risks and Preventive Measures
| Possible Risk | Preventive / Management Strategy |
|---|---|
| Infection or fever | Antibiotic prophylaxis and sterile environment |
| Temporary bowel dysfunction | Gradual diet progression and supportive care |
| Chemotherapy-related side effects | Local administration minimizes systemic toxicity |
| Fatigue or delayed healing | Nutritional and physiotherapy support |
| Fluid/electrolyte imbalance | Continuous postoperative monitoring |
