Gastric Balloon FAQ

A gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure where a soft balloon is placed into the stomach and filled with saline. It helps patients feel full faster and eat smaller portions, supporting safe and effective weight loss.

The gastric balloon is generally suitable for patients with a BMI between 27–40 who have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. It is not recommended for those with certain stomach conditions, prior gastric surgery, or women who are pregnant/breastfeeding.

The balloon is usually kept in place for 6 months, after which it is removed safely. During this time, patients are guided to adopt healthy eating and lifestyle habits for long-term success.

On average, patients lose 10–25 kilograms within 6 months, depending on their starting weight, diet, and lifestyle changes.

The procedure is performed under mild sedation and takes about 20–30 minutes. Some patients may experience temporary discomfort such as nausea or cramps during the first few days, but these usually improve quickly.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, bloating, or reflux in the first week. Rarely, balloon intolerance may occur and require early removal. At Büyük Anadolu Hospital, our specialists provide medication and aftercare support to minimize discomfort.
